Aileen Mapes, Dance MFA Candidate to present thesis
Guerrilla Dance Attack Unveiled at Alwun House
Phoenix, Arizona
March 1, 2009
ASU Herberger College of the Arts, Alwun House, and Aileen Mapes announce Guerrilla Dance Attack Unveiled on Friday, April 10 and Saturday April, 11 at Alwun House, 1204 East Roosevelt in Phoenix, Arizona. This event marks a rare presentation of Dance Master of Fine Arts candidate thesis work outside of the college’s performance venues.
Aileen Mapes, Herberger College Dance MFA candidate, has disengaged from expectations that dance is an art to be enjoyed within the confines of auditoriums and theaters. Prompted by declining audiences for dance productions held in these types of traditional performance venues, Aileen’s work calls into question the roles of spectator and performer. Posed as dynamic riddles, her choreography hits the streets, engaging accidental spectators as observers, interpreters, participants and creators.
Aileen’s applied thesis project began in late November 2008 and has been unfolding with weekly guerrilla attacks in public transitional spaces throughout Tempe and downtown Phoenix. Each attack interweaves studied choreography and site-specific improvisation that critique the ways in which environmental and societal constructs regulate physical movement within public space.
The final Unveiled performances at Alwun House on April 10 and 11 will feature mixed-media documentation, dance and musical interpretations of the evolution and lifespan of Guerrilla Dance Attack. Doors open at 7:00 PM. Cover is $5 at the door. Refreshments will be served.
